Comparing costs: What local stores will charge for the traditional Thanksgiving feast
10:46 AM CST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008
HOUSTON -- Grocery stores all over the country will be packed this weekend as shoppers fill their carts with turkeys and all the trimmings.
Stuffing yourself at Thanksgiving will cost a little more this year thanks to the rise in grocery prices. How much more?
11 News went to HEB, Wal-Mart, Randalls, Fiesta and Kroger to compare prices for a family of six to eight people.
We checked the cost of everything from turkey and dressing to cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
The best buys on the day we shopped were at Wal-Mart where the typical Thanksgiving Day feast will run you about $57.
HEB came in second with a price tag of under $63.
If you shopped at Fiesta, your Thanksgiving meal would cost about $63.
The same meal at Kroger and Randalls will set you back about $76.
There are some deals to be found. For example, if you spend $20 at Kroger, you’ll get a turkey for just 39 cents a pound. That’s the cheapest 11 News found anywhere.
Also, if you buy a ham at HEB, you’ll get a 10 pound turkey for free.
There's also a chance the stores we visited will have special sales between now and Thanksgiving so make sure you do your homework before you shop!
