Houston elderly wait in rain for chance at affordable homes
06:14 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
HOUSTON – The fierce competition for affordable housing in Houston had dozens of senior citizens sleeping on the sidewalk in the rain Monday. But tempers flared and confusion arose when other people arrived saying they already had a spot on the waiting list.
“Someone arrived saying they had a list from two days ago and that they had been waiting as well. That list should be honored because it was from two days ago. There’s no organization,” said Patricia De Los Rios.
Hundreds of senior citizens want a low-income apartment at a complex that’s being built in southwest Houston.
The Daughters of Penelope, a non-profit Greek organization, is constructing the building.
“Unfortunately, we have 67 apartments and the need in Houston is great,” said Mary Vergas who is with the organization.
Translators tried to help.
Those in line hoped to fill out applications Tuesday, but only 125 are being accepted.
This is the first housing project the Daughters of Penelope has built.
