Public hearing aims to improve highway safety
Officials: 35 crashes recorded on road so far in 2008

Efforts are underway to improve a dangerous stretch of road on Highway 183 between SH 29 and 183A.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and Williamson County officials are holding a public hearing Tuesday night to see what drivers think of making improvements to the highway.
Local officials say there have been 35 accidents between Leander and Liberty Hill within the past year on the eight-mile stretch of the highway.
The latest crash took place earlier this month when Casey Furtado, 25, veered off the road and over-corrected, driving into oncoming traffic. Furtado, who was pregnant, collided with another car head-on, killing herself, her unborn child and the driver of the other car.
Currently, the stretch of road is four-lane undivided roadway. The proposed project would involve upgrading that stretch of highway to a divided road and replacing the existing San Gabriel River bridge with two new structures.
A subdivision has been built along the road and the number of businesses in the area continues to expand. Officials say the proposed roadway improvements would help address the growing population in that area.
The public hearing will start at 6 p.m. in the Liberty Hill High School cafeteria on West State Highway 29.
The project isn't expected to start until sometime in 2009.
