TSA to test paperless boarding passes in Austin
02:54 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Paperless boarding passes are coming to Austin.
The Transportation Security Administration and Continental Airlines Tuesday said that a pilot program for paperless boarding passes will expand to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
According to the TSA, Continental Airlines passengers will be able to receive their boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs. The pass will have a bar code and passenger and flight information.
Security workers at the checkpoints will use handheld scanners to check the boarding passes. TSA officials say the technology will help them find fake boarding passes, improve customer service and reduce paper.
"The deployment of the paperless technology signifies the TSA's ongoing commitment to develop and execute new technologies within aviation while enhancing security," said Mike Scott, TSA federal security director for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, in a news release.
