Rains create big sinkhole on Bastrop road
10:26 PM CDT on Sunday, August 17, 2008
Bastrop County got a lot of rain Saturday night, which was good news for most people. But all that water caused a two-block section of one street in the city of Bastrop to collapse.
Most of the sink hole on Pecan Street has been filled in with fresh dirt, but parts of the road were sinking.
Pecan Street was already under construction when it rained over night. Crews had just installed a new sewer line and when the two inches of rain fell. The city manager says the seal didn't hold up. That's when patches of the road started to sink.
Crews were alerted and on the scene by about 9:00 a.m. But by that time the sink hole was 100 feet long and more than a foot deep in some places.
People who live off Pecan Street say they've never dealt with a sink hole before.
"It was just holes, you know, gravel had sunken then it had water holes and then when you hit then you found out how deep the holes were, but like I said it wasn't from a bad water line. It's just with them redoing the streets," said nearby neighbor Lucille Winkler.
Pecan Street was blocked off around nine this morning to keep cars from driving down and potentially causing more sink holes.
It was still closed off for most traffic Sunday evening, but people who live out here are able to drive down it enough to get home.
More rain is expected, so the city office and police will be out monitoring the road in case it starts to sink again.
