A SWAT standoff in North Austin ended peacefully this evening after 3 people were held hostage.

Around 1:20 Saturday afternoon Austin Police were called out to Anderson Lane and Woodrow where a shooting was reported.

No one was hurt, but that's where the suspect, 26-year-old Ruben Avila, got in his car and drove away from police, arriving at the Thurman Heights apartment complex.

The portion of North Lamar in front of the complex was shut down from Powell Lane up to Thurman.

Dozens of people gathered to watch as the police SWAT team prepared to go into the complex.

Avila had barricaded himself with a weapon inside one of the apartments.

“When he ran into the apartment there were three people inside: two males and one elderly female. They were held for about 15 to 20 minutes by the armed man and he let them go. So they made it out safely, and were not injured,” said Austin Police Department spokesperson Veneza Aguinaga.

Just before 5:00 SWAT team negotiators were able to get Avila out of the apartment.

They were able to do that verbally and did not have to use excessive force.

Avila is in custody under some outstanding warrants.

He may now face charges of false restraint and aggravated assault.
