Central Texas gets good rain, harmful lightning
10:50 PM CDT on Saturday, August 16, 2008
Saturday marked the first serious rain to hit Austin in quite a while. Surrounding counties, especially Bastrop, got scattered showers.
The rain did not officially touch the official rain gauges, but showers did pass through the area. More are expected for several days.
A stationary front over Texas, combined with an incoming wave from Denver and daytime heating could result in as many as 3 inches of rain.
The storms that passed through Austin may have played a role in a Southeast Austin house fire.
The home is located just east of Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
Fire investigators said lightning may have touched off the fire that damaged part of the house, located on Alomar Court.
The family living there said they first smelled smoke coming from the attic and called 911.
By the time fire fighters arrived flames could be seen coming through the roof.
Fire fighters were able to get the fire under control.
"We know that there were lightning strikes in the area, so we're looking into that as a possibility," said AFD Battalion Chief Mike Frick.
Fire fighters did have to tear out part of a wall that was heavily damaged in the fire.
While the family will have quite a bit to clean up here, fire fighters do say all of the damage can be repaired.
