Extra deputies on patrol
01:00 PM CDT on Friday, August 15, 2008
You may see some extra deputies patrolling Central Texas roads.
They're getting a jump on the Labor Day holiday.
Sheriff's deputies will quite literally be stepping it up for the next 18 days.
S-T-E-P stands for Selective Traffic Enforcement Program.
Extra deputies will be on the road starting Friday and will remain in place through Labor Day, September 1.
They'll be looking for drivers who are speeding and those who may be drinking and driving -- the two main causes of traffic fatalities in Travis County.
The penalties for a first DWI offense are: Up to $2000 fine, 72 hours to 6-months in jail, loss of driver’s license for up to a year, $1000 annual fee for 3-consecutive years to retain driver’s license.
The extra manpower is made possible by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.
