Two people attacked in North Austin
10:28 PM CDT on Thursday, August 14, 2008
An Austin man is accused of using a large rock to viciously attack a woman at a bus stop in broad daylight.
On Wednesday, two people were attacked mid-morning in North Austin within minutes of one another.
According to the police report, Diego Salinas picked up a rock the size of a brick and hit a woman at a bus stop in the 7500 block of Northcross Drive after she wouldn't tell him her name. Minutes later, a man was attacked, also with a rock, near Northcross Mall.
Police arrested Salinas not long after the second attack along the 8000 block of Shoal Creek Boulevard after the woman positively identified him.
With criminals striking all the time, police say there are ways to avoid falling prey.
“Walk with confidence, walk like you know what's going on,” advised Austin Police Detective James Mason.
At Aim and Focus Karate, 8863 Anderson Mill Road, Master Ben Johnson teaches a lesson in self defense. He instructs his students to be confident and stay calm when confronted.
“Always be of aware of what's going on around you. Don't let the situation dictate what your response is going to be,” Johnson advised. “Be respectful, be kind, back away from the situation.”
Johnson says it's that confidence that will often diffuse the situation and keep you safe.
“You make good eye contact. You don't use sarcasm. You speak respectfully. You can diffuse the situation and allow yourself to just walk away,” he said.
Police don’t have a motive yet. Salinas remains in jail. His bond is set for $15,000.
