Man accused of thefts at Austin hospitals
03:11 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
An Austin man faces felony theft charges in connection with a series of thefts at Austin area hospitals, including one at Dell Children's Medical Center in Central East Austin, where police say he stole a wallet out of a staff member's purse.
The incident happened in November 2007. According to court documents, a staff member stepped away from her desk, and when she returned her purse had been moved, and her wallet was missing. Police checked surveillance video of the area and saw a man walk in and act suspiciously.
In July 2008, off-duty Austin police officers, who were working security at Brackenridge Hospital, identified the man as a suspect in a number of thefts at Brackenridge.
The suspect, John Johnson, 49, was wearing a GPS ankle monitor because he was on parole from a burglary conviction. The arrest affidavit says Johnson's ankle monitor shows he was at Dell Children's Medical Center during the November theft. The ankle monitor also places him in the hospital at the time of similar thefts.
Bond was set at $10,000.
