Burglars target businesses near downtown Austin 2nd Street
06:29 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
The retail development around Austin City Hall has brought in thieves as well as customers.
Jordan Feiner, co-owner of Leaf Restaurant, spent the normally busy lunch hour Tuesday turning away customers after a burglar turned his restaurant upside down.
"We've told our employees not to show up today. I certainly apologize," said Feiner. "It was a puddle of glass in front of the side door, money all over the floor in the kitchen."
A block away, the RunTex store at Austin City Hall was also hit. The method was the same. The thieves broke in through a side door -- possibly with construction equipment -- and went straight for the cash registers, costing the store hundreds of dollars.
"Seems like someone's targeting this area," Feiner said. "It's kind of scary."
Feiner says they're not the only victims. He's heard of three other business break-ins just blocks away.
"I guess they figured they had a little chance to try to break-in and try and get out. Do everything they can," said APD Detective Ralph Johnson.
Johnson says the area is attracting thieves for two reasons: New businesses and the cover of the empty construction sites at night. He thinks things will cool off once everyone moves in.
"Just pay attention to the people downtown and the activities downtown. You never know. Anything can happen at anytime," Johnson said.
Feiner has his own advice, "Never, ever leave money in your till overnight."
Police are now reviewing city hall surveillance video. They were also able to collect DNA because the thieves cut themselves on the broken glass at Leaf Restaurant.
