TxDOT turns to tolls on 290 East
Toll road proposal still needs final approval

With heavy traffic congestion on Highway 290 East only worsening, the Texas Department of Transportation says it needs to find a solution.
“There's a lot that goes by here, particularly as rush hour approaches,” said Mike Stovall, Austex Office Products.
That could mean putting in more toll booths. If TxDOT gets its latest proposal approved, a new toll would stretch down Highway 290 East from Highway 183 to SH 130.
The toll road is designed to have six lanes for the expressway and another three lanes going both directions on the frontage road, but for some businesses that may mean moving.
Austex Office Products has been at its location off Highway 290 East for more than 10 years. TXDOT says it's one of 10 businesses and one residence that will be forced to move when the highway expands.
“They're going to be putting the toll road right through our location, so we're going to have to move,” said Stovall.
Even though the building will be torn down, the employees at Austex say they understand the need for more road space.
“Given how much everything is growing out here, I think it's inevitable. I don't think there's really any way to avoid it, there has to be an upgrade somewhere,” said Stovall.
However, on the street, some drivers wonder why the solution has to be a toll road.
“It doesn't make it any easier on me. It makes me spend more money,” said one Austin driver.
TxDOT says a toll is the only answer right now because there isn't enough money in the budget to build the kind of highway it needs to meet the growing traffic.
For other drivers who use Highway 290 every day, a toll is a good idea to help them skip over the lights.
“It would be nice to have the option to go straight from Manor to downtown Austin,” said Gilbert Hicks, driver.
Hicks says he doesn’t mind the changes even if it means paying up.
“Not at all, there's my TxTag right there,” said Hicks.
TXDOT says the 290 East toll road still needs final approval.
