One man remains at Brackenridge Hospital after a tree branch fell on him at Zilker Park over the weekend.  The branch also crashed onto a number of vehicles causing major damage.

An arborist for the city says there were no signs of decay or disease on the branch that fell.  He says the tree has been inspected twice, most recently in July, and calls what happened a freak accident.

“It was very unexpected and very unfortunate,” said spokesman Victor Ovalle, spokesman for the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department.

A large pecan tree limb broke off hitting David Saverse in the head and smashing eight cars.  Saverse remains at Brackenridge Hospital in fair condition.

“Our hearts go out to the family,” said Ovalle.  “We never want an injury like this to happen in our parks system.”

Austin Parks & Recreation said Monday that a piece of metal attached near the branch was not a problem because the branch showed no signs of decay.

“There were no abnormalities,” Ovalle said.

The city arborist also said drought had nothing to do with it.

People KVUE News spoke with Monday said they feel safe in the park.

“I think that things like that are bound to happen.  I have tree limbs falling all the time (in my backyard) and I maintain my trees,” said Alessandro Pizzochero, an engineer.

“I think it was just a freak accident, just one of those things that happened with natural causes.  I don't think there should be any fear involved,” said Jana Norville.

This isn't the first time a tree branch fell in the park. Four years ago 3 people were injured when a branch fell on them during a picnic near Barton Springs Pool.
