Fired APD officer wins his job back
06:27 PM CDT on Monday, August 11, 2008
An arbitrator Monday afternoon ruled that fired APD Commander Larry Oliver will get his job back.
Oliver was fired earlier this year for allegations of not reporting a discriminatory comment about another officer and insubordination for speaking to that officer about his punishment before it was finalized.
The comments were made by another commander regarding lesbian officers. The other commander was suspended for 20 days.
"I've been on the force for 24 years now. To have something like this happen at this point in my career was really disappointing. It's been tough being at home for five months now and it's work that I miss," Oliver said.
The arbitrator ruled Oliver could return to the force, but he must serve a 20-day suspension.
Oliver was told he could choose to be suspended for 30 days or suspended indefinitely. Oliver said he chose indefinite suspension so he could appeal.
Chief Art Acevedo announced Monday that Larry Oliver will report back to work Tuesday morning. But, it won't be easy for him to regain the chief's trust. During the arbitration hearing, the chief said he did not think he could trust Oliver again if he was reinstated. Monday, the chief talked about that issue.
"We are going to treat him no different than anybody else. He will be held to the same level of accountability as ever other commander in this department, every other officer in this department. He will be expected to do the right thing. I really believe, hopefully in my heart that he will not be back at the well again, but time will tell," said APD Chief Art Acevedo.
Oliver will be credited for time served. He will also be paid for the five months he was out of work.
