Cesar Chavez set to open up both ways
08:18 AM CDT on Monday, August 11, 2008
Drivers used to dealing with barricades and chaos on Cesar Chavez will have a two-way street on Monday.
Since last November, the road has been under some major work so that eventually the one-way signs that are posted will disappear.
“[Between] Congress and the water, you kind of need two ways right along this water line,” said Burke.
The two-way section will spread across five downtown blocks from Brazos to San Antonio Street.
The two-way conversion project took about $7 million and fell two months behind so Monday’s ribbon cutting ceremony is something many drivers are looking forward to seeing.
City officials say Cesar Chavez is the first of what's expected to be a number of two-way conversion roads in downtown Austin.
“Traffic congestion will never go away, but alleviating some pain… We'll always be looking forward to that. And when the businesses start opening up, filling up the warehouse district, it's just going to make everything a lot better,” said downtown Austin resident Brian Burke.
The change is going to mean fewer eastbound lanes than before, because now there's going to be at least two lanes going both east and west.
It’s a change plenty of Austin drivers are ready for after 30 years of one-way detours.
"You had to do this big loop around and it would end up taking an extra ten minutes, so this is great," said downtown resident Omar Ghattas.
There will still be some construction in the area. The city wants to complete a decorative walk path and put in medians in certain spots down the road. That work is expected to be completed within the next couple of months.
