Austin's hottest summer in 80 years
10:43 PM CDT on Saturday, August 9, 2008
Austin is sweating out its hottest summer in more than 80 years.
Saturday marked the 45th day of triple-digit temperatures.
The last time we had more than 45 days above 100 degrees was in 1925, and that was for the entire year.
Even at the hottest time of day you'll find people running or exercising at Lady Bird Lake. Throughout the afternoon there was no shortage of people coming out to kayak, run, walk their dogs. You wouldn't think coming outdoors as a way to beat the heat, but once you receive this month's energy bill you may decide to leave your house so you can turn down the air conditioning.
This past Tuesday, Austin Energy says Austin set a new all-time peak demand record.
That means between 4:30-5:00 p.m. that day, Austinites used the most energy in the history of the company.
Austin realtor Vince Saporita says he sees the savings energy efficient homes will bring you on a hot day like this.
"You know, so many people like the old character, but their bills are astronomical. And when people do the re-builds, they do it to Austin standards, which are very high. But things like double pane gas filled windows bring really outstanding savings on their electric bills," said Saporita.
