Community steps in help family get Habitat home
12:25 PM CDT on Friday, August 8, 2008
We all know times are tough these days, and that means charities can be hurt financially as well.
A recent Habitat for Humanity project was in doubt for awhile, but that's all changed.
In the Devonshire Village neighborhood, Habitat for Humanity volunteers are hard at work on the beginning stages of the Garcia home.
The Garcias were in line for their home, and there didn't appear to be any problems. But just last week some unfortunate circumstances led to the pulling of a good portion of the $60,000 that were needed to complete the home.
So Habitat for Humanity had to reach out to the community for help to make up the difference.
At the moment, more than $58,000 has been raised for the project, leaving it just $1,500 shy of what's needed for completion.
So the Garcias and others will soon be proud homeowners.
The Garcias, a family of six living in a small apartment, have put in over 350 hours of "sweat equity" and taken 24 homeownership courses already - even before construction on their home began.
