Program helps families put food on the table
08:49 PM CDT on Saturday, July 26, 2008
With rising food and gas prices, some families across Central Texas are struggling to make ends meet, and keep food on the table.
Now a national program is helping to feed those who need help.
Saturday morning volunteers at Our Savior Lutheran church boxed up food, getting ready to not only feed the body, but also the spirit. Saturday was distribution day for Angel Food Ministries.
Sheryl Hunt runs the Angel Food Ministries program at our Savior Lutheran, where the program has been running for almost two years. She says while dozens of people, from students to large families take part, they want to serve many more.
"If you get one box for one person in the household it will last them more than a month," said Hunt. "It doesn't matter if you are on food stamps or you make $100,000 a year, if you think that this is going to be beneficial for you, hey, we're here to serve you."
Angel Food Ministries started back in 1994, and today feeds more than 350,000 families in 35 states. At the beginning of each month, participants can place an order for boxes containing anything from meat, eggs, juice, even fresh fruits and vegetables. Each box costs $18-30.
Those who are pinching pennies say this program is truly a blessing, and for those helping to feed the flock seeing the relieved smiles on people's faces is the greatest reward.
Dozens of churches around Central Texas offer the Angel Food service. For more information log visit this link.
