Rain blamed for roof collapse in Garland
12:53 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
GARLAND — Heavy overnight rain is apparently to blame for the partial roof collapse at commercial building in Garland early Tuesday.
A hole about the size of two SUVs could be seen from the air over the Family Thrift Center in the 800 block of West Miller Road.
Garland Fire Department spokesperson Merrill Balanciere said drains on the roof of the 82,000 square foot building were clogged with leaves and debris. The structure was unable to sustain the weight of the accumulated rainwater.
The roof collapse broke the building's sprinkler pipe system, which — in turn — automatically alerted the fire department, Balanciere said.
There was 8 to 10 inches of water on the floor of the thrift center, an adjoining bingo hall and possibly one or two other businesses in the 43-year-old building.
No injuries were reported. There were also no witnesses.
"We thought it was a broken pipe. It ended up being the roof caved in," said Cindy Bryan, property manager.
The Family Thrift Center said they do have insurance.
