Dallas Code Compliance makes moves to improve operation

12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 20, 2008

The last boxes from the offices of Code Compliance administrators were hauled from Dallas City Hall this week to their new location at 3112 Canton St.

THE BIG PICTURE: The move is part of a plan implemented by Code Compliance interim director Forest Turner to reorganize the office into a more responsive operation, more focused on fixing problems than issuing tickets.

WHAT'S ALREADY HAPPENED: Rank-and-file code reps have scattered into offices in five districts around town, rather than being clustered at City Hall and a single satellite office as before. Code reps now work beats, like police officers. The idea is to make them responsible for working with residents and being creative in solving problems, Mr. Turner said.

TROUBLED HISTORY: Code Compliance has long been one of the city's most troubled departments, with low morale and high complaint levels. So far, the reorganization seems to be helping. And an influx of new code and animal control officers is on the way.

WHO TO CALL: If you have a code issue, call 311 or go to regional offices directly.
